It is a metamorphic rock composed mainly of calcium carbonate, silica and iron. It is formed through a metamorphic process from sedimentary rocks such as lime or dolomite, which causes a complete recrystallisation of the calcium carbonate from which they are largely composed, giving rise to a mosaic of lime or dolomite crystals.
